Four Material Choices:Four Different Engineering Priorities.

There are four material choices for different engineering priories.

Zinc alloys. Nickel-based alloys. Magnesium alloys. Invar alloys. All can be machined. But they are often chosen for very different engineering reasons.

Zinc Alloys — When manufacturability and production efficiency matter. Many zinc alloys offer excellent die-casting properties, making them suitable for complex components and high-volume production. But operating temperature, long-term loading and dimensional requirements still need consideration.

Nickel-Based Alloys — When demanding operating conditions matter. Depending on the alloy, nickel-based materials can offer excellent corrosion resistance, high-temperature strength or both. The manufacturing trade-off? Some grades are challenging to machine due to high cutting forces, work hardening and tool wear.

Magnesium Alloys — When weight reduction matters. Their low density makes them attractive for lightweight components. But material selection involves more than weight alone. Stiffness, corrosion protection and safe machining practices must also be considered.

Invar Alloys — When thermal expansion matters. These iron-nickel alloys are valued for their low thermal expansion over specific temperature ranges. But low thermal expansion doesn’t eliminate distortion caused by residual stresses or machining processes.

Four material choices. Four different engineering priorities. The question isn’t simply: Can this material be machined? It’s: Why was this material selected, and can the manufacturing process meet the designer’s requirements? At JUFENG Precision, we help customers answer exactly this question.
